Choosing the right colour for your curtains
One of the most important choices is the colour. Different colours can have a huge impact on both the overall look of the room and how the decor makes you feel. Red is great for attracting attention and can accentuate a great view but it is also an emotionally powerful colour so could have a negative effect on how you feel. Greens and blues are much more calming colours and can help to create a feeling of peace and tranquillity. If you aren't planning to redecorate the rest of a room then it's really important to choose curtains which complement your existing decor so gentle shades such as creams and pale pastel colours are a good choice. If you have a particularly plain room which you'd like to spruce up then a pair of bold coloured curtains with a striking pattern can bring interest to the room.
Getting the light level right
The type of curtains you choose will also be affected by the function of the room and the direction your house faces. Lots of natural light is a huge benefit in a home as it can make areas seem larger and save you from switching your lights on. However in rooms such as bedrooms, natural light is not always a good thing as it can prevent you from getting a good night's sleep. Choosing curtains with blackout lining is a good idea for bedrooms, particularly if a bedroom faces east as it will receive the full light of the sun in a morning. Blackout curtains are also a good choice for home offices or even TV rooms to block out the glare from the sun.
